58468_0: [wiki sysop post] an update to let you know there is an update coming

I will tell you what I do know at the moment.

Wiki.theppn is NOT closed and any copies of the site should not be supported. We do not back them or have any affiliation with them and they are essentially taking our information without permission.

I heavily apologize for the downtime and my own lack of checking this community and setting things straight. I didn't realize there were so many people waiting for a simple status update, but believe me, I understand the feeling. I also understand you want a source for Asian pop culture information, but we are the place to go to, even though we've been experiencing unreasonable downtime.

Please, just hang in there a little bit longer. I'll be able to give you concrete information soon.

(Anonymous): Ehhhh

I'm going to a be a bitch here. wiki.ThePPN is down for -like you said it yourself- an unreasonable amount of time. It went up a few months ago, and went down quicker then it went up. You guys have managed to run wiki.ThePPN for quite a long time with minor downtime. But due to the massive amount of downtime you guys have lost a lot of trust. And bringing little to no updates whilst there are literally more then 10.000 people waiting for news isn't going to help either. People got tired of waiting and decided to create a new Wiki. Now that these wiki's are growing wiki.ThePPN suddenly posts an update that there will be important updates soon, and stresses out that other wiki's are taking your information without your permission. Have you ever considered that the same people who gave you the information are taking it back and placing it in a place that is accessible?

wiki.ThePPN is not the place to go to. A server error is not as useful as you might think. Bring up your site before you make statements like that. 3 months of downtime on the Internet is a decade in real life.

Never the less good luck rebuilding your wiki, as you guys were the place to go to.

Brian

Can't find my password so replying anon.

You are right, it is an unreasonable amount of time, and the lack of information does mean that everybody is left pissing in the wind wondering what to do with their free time. What has happened is unfortunate, and the frustration that you all feel is only a fraction of what Wapi and SA are going though. The length of this outage is squarely on my shoulders I am prioritizing family and work above bringing the site online. Christmas and new year split between Japan and England plus all the end of year wrapping up my team needs to cover in the office means no attention left for the wiki.

At least some kind of feedback from Wiki.theppn, however it's a little odd one:
"copies of the site should not be supported"
Why ? I just don't understand why. It sounds like that the theppn owns the information on it which is simply not true. It belongs to the public, Wiki.theppn has nothing to do with it. If the people decide to support any other site, they can. And anyways what are we talking about ? Wiki.theppn still doesn't exist. How could we support it..

Why should we wait ? There are other wikis on the net.

(Anonymous): A thought

I think that what they meant about not supporting other sites was beacuse some sites are taking ownership or implying affiliation to the original wiki.theppn. I saw one even using the same logo and clearly saying that since they couldn't repair the old database they were going to start from scrap, clearly letting everybody understand that they were the ones in charge of the original wiki.theppn.
I'm not saying that those sites should not be supported, on the contrary, they could be a fine back up for when theppn goes down again, but they should say they are other poeple and be clear about it and come up with their own logos and stuff!
I'm glad to receive news about the original wiki.theppn being scheduled to be up again, it's been sorely missed and deeply needed!
So HURRY UP! ;)

Laters guys!

I have to agree with a lot of people above... intlwota.com practically said you guys were never coming back. Therefore, in the interim of several months, lots of people wanted information about various things wiki.theppn used to have posted, and it evolved into deciding to form new places where the information could be gathered and be accessible. I know things have happened and that's why you guys haven't had it up before now, but you don't have the right to bad mouth sites that jumped in and did what you couldn't at the time. Just make wiki.theppn all it can be again and people will naturally go there instead of the other sites, but if it goes down again? Well, then, hey! The information will still be out there. Under the creative commons and copyright laws that govern wikis, you don't have any more right to the material than anyone else since it is user-generated content. I already know people who plan to boycott your site because of the attitude you have toward the so-called "copies". Don't assume that just because you were once great means that you're allowed to be mean and stupid about the situation now.

You got to be kidding me! Ordinary wikipedia.org never gave us any details of discographies of some artists like mihimaru GT, Jyongri, EXILE, SG Wannabe! I just wish all JPOP, KPOP, CPOP records including AVEX TRAX should cooperate and allow them to gather info about discographies. BOYCOTTING WILL MAKE IT WORSE! Creative commons and copyright laws should loosen their laws a bit because some visitors don't understand japanese, korean & chinese language, so that's why Wiki.ThePPN needs to be reopened to provide them in English.

Great news! Thanks for the update.

It's true that thePPN has been down for months, but there's no reason a bunch of people should be so obsessed over it. Where do you think the contributers got the information in the first place? Official artist websites, Japanese websites, forums, English j-pop websites, Wikipedia, googling... the sources are endless. Sure, it's not all in one place and it might be hard to find, but if you're so desperate for information to whine about it then tough.

"But I can't read Japanese!"
It's the Internet! Learn to use it.

"I wanna tag my music"
Artists have discographies on their official websites. If you're picky about capitalization and such, then at least they'll be accurate instead of putting in someone's mistakes on thePPN. If you don't know how to romanize then refer to the links above.

There are many forums and fan sites on Japanese music/individual artists if you wanna get the latest news.

Also, I don't know why people are threatening to go to other wikis for their information because the other wikis that are up suck anyway. The backup at wikia shouldn't even be called a backup because it doesn't have much and j-ongaku is full of H!P crap. If there are any "better" wikis that I didn't mention, well then it just shows how great it is because I don't even know it exists.

MAKAI
Stereo Pony

even I want to see more explanations on discographies like SG Wannabe's second JPOP single, In The Rain and all RYTHEM's singles & albums. TQ!

One helpful thing that might be done until theppn wiki is back online might be doing a 302 temporary redirect for all wiki.theppn.org requests to a static page with updates? If you guys are running Apache I can probably provide a rewrite rule to do that. Just thinking out loud a little.

To dedicated users like us, posting an update about thePPN's status makes sense already. At least we know that the staff is persevering to bring it back. Something as simple as that will give hope to the hundreds of people thirsty for information that only thePPN can gather.

Good luck in everything!

You have no right to tell people you are the place to go. If others wish to open, manage and run a site that doesn't go down every other month, they have every right to as long as they don't copy/paste your content.
