58468_0: [wiki sysop post] an update to let you know there is an update coming

I will tell you what I do know at the moment.

Wiki.theppn is NOT closed and any copies of the site should not be supported. We do not back them or have any affiliation with them and they are essentially taking our information without permission.

I heavily apologize for the downtime and my own lack of checking this community and setting things straight. I didn't realize there were so many people waiting for a simple status update, but believe me, I understand the feeling. I also understand you want a source for Asian pop culture information, but we are the place to go to, even though we've been experiencing unreasonable downtime.

Please, just hang in there a little bit longer. I'll be able to give you concrete information soon.

Please don't apologize, I understand where you're coming from and if I didn't know what was going on with the wiki I might have done something similar.

Our problem with Wikia (and I should have addressed this earlier instead of just declining their offer - I'll be making a separate post later) is that they are a for-profit website and ads are scattered all over the place. It appears if you log in the ads go away, but not at the original Asian Wiki. We pride ourselves on not being like that - users can visit anonymously, without an account, and there is no advertising. (When I say "advertising," I'm including the banners for the other Wikis hosted at Wikia.) Additionally, Saa, Womby and I have always found Wikia to be a cluttered mess. True, not all of our pages were easily read or navigable, but that was an actual article problem, not the overall design of our wiki.

It's also true that another reason for not moving to the Wikia in the past was because we were fine with our current hosting. Obviously, we're having more problems with it lately, but we had problems with the old server as well. It's just that back then, Womby had more time to deal with them. Now, like most of us, he's become incredibly busy with other things in his life (like working to pay the bills - Japan's work society is crazy yo) and he doesn't have as much time as he used to. However, I wouldn't trust anybody but Womby with the wiki's maintenance or its existance, and personal bias aside, I will always support him with it. I have faith in him that the wiki will come back. Why? Because he's an amazing coder, and because good things come to those who are patient.

Some times we just need to wait longer than others.

Thanks for replying.

Many a time I've needed some info and googled what I was searching for, adding theppn in the search terms as that always used to find exactly what I wanted, and now it takes a lot longer as sometimes nowhere else seems to have what I'm looking for. So the wiki is definitely missed, by many people. (Earlier I even found someone had posted a question on yahoo questions or google questions or whatever the sites called, asking where the site had gone!).

I hope you can get it back soon, and if it's true that the database really is unrecoverable as mentioned in an earlier thread then it shouldnt be hard for a good coder like womby to use the manual procedure I worked out and automate it.

Ah I wasn't aware of the ads, I just logged out and there's a Ringo Starr video right in the middle of the Matsuura Aya page. :bangs-head-on-wall.gif:
