58468_0: [status update]
Obviously, we're still down. To those of you who have been patiently waiting, thank you so much. I'm really sorry about this whole thing and wish I could do more. I miss the wiki just as much as everyone else and this has been extremely stressful.
I have not had any contact with Womby since the last post and at this point I cannot do anything about the status of the wiki because he is the only one with access to the backups,
so as angry as you may get and take it out in the comments, it won't change anything.
Thank you, and I'll try to get in contact with him once more.

Yeah, that's just a new one but not ours.

Amanda, I'm trying to understand the situation, is the following correct?
* Womby lives in Japan, and is the only one with the data.
* He was running theppn with his own systems from his apartment.
* There has been no substantial contact with him since around the time of the December 2nd post.
* He knows that many others have offered technical and financial help.
We all want theppn to come back, and I know that you and Wapiko have done all that you can to keep us informed. Have you thought about what can be done if theppn cannot be restored? Is it time to at least make a plan for starting over?
Sun, Mar. 8th, 2009 09:14 pm (UTC)
You are correct aside from the third bullet - the last time we had any lasting conversation on it was back in February.
I haven't thought about what would happen if it can't be restored, mostly because I don't want it to come to that. Womby contacted me last night after I made this post actually, and he's been working for the last few months with what little spare time he does have to get the backups, but I think the server we're on now has also been giving him problems. Unfortunately, I wasn't readily available to talk when he did find me so nothing much more happened.
Also, me = Wapiko.
Sun, Mar. 8th, 2009 08:45 pm (UTC)
Ouch, that sucks. I hope you can contact Womby soon.
But if you can't, do you have a plan to make a new website?
I know a lot of people here would be willing to help out. :o
Sun, Mar. 8th, 2009 09:15 pm (UTC)
I think a new website will be made, it's just a matter of when and how. If it comes to that, I'll definitely be recruiting help.
Mon, Mar. 9th, 2009 01:38 am (UTC)
If Womby is looking for a good new server, go to GoDaddy or Surpass, easy as.

(Anonymous): The feb-08 backups are already available online.
For those who are frustrated or have given up hope, alot of wiki.theppn data is backed up publicly at the internet archive wayback machine (pics too).
It's mind numbingly slow and not meant to be a replacement. However with a concerted effort the editing community can get the data moved over to http://j-ongaku.org in much less time than theppn has been down. And instead of sitting anxiously on our hands or blaming others, we can get to work on a replacement now. I bet if everybody who looked up a missing page added it from the wayback machine we could get this done in a few short months.
Or we could stay here and keep hoping for a miracle, pointing fingers, yelling at each other, or crying over the hole in the internet we could patching ourselves...

58468_0: Re: The feb-08 backups are already available online.
It's a great idea, but does it have the history as well? That's a big part of the wiki =/
Wed, Mar. 11th, 2009 02:33 pm (UTC)
Thanks for helping by keeping us informed. I think it's awesome that you take the time to post this when you could just ignore us, especially considering some of the crap we've been spouting.
Wed, Mar. 11th, 2009 07:30 pm (UTC)
so what actually happened? I remember reading something about hackers?
Thu, Mar. 12th, 2009 11:43 pm (UTC)
Incompetence is the answer you're looking for.
Thu, Mar. 12th, 2009 06:02 pm (UTC)
Couldn´t you just open it without any backups and the users at first try to collect all the informations once again?
Sun, Mar. 15th, 2009 03:46 am (UTC)
That would be easy and sensible. Of course they can't.
Sat, Mar. 14th, 2009 11:56 am (UTC)
Thanks for the update.
I'm still missing wiki, yet it's been for so long that I've got used to a living hell of sorting new music arrivals without using it. *sigh*
Mon, Mar. 16th, 2009 05:47 pm (UTC)
i'm starting to believe it's not coming back.
i had hope, but now... i don't know anymore.
Mon, Mar. 16th, 2009 07:10 pm (UTC)
Does he know anybody in Japan that could help?
Tue, Mar. 17th, 2009 05:10 am (UTC)
This is starting to get ridiculous.
You've been saying you're working hard, and you'll pull through, but we've seen no progress what-so-ever. You aren't even reliable
Fri, Mar. 20th, 2009 05:59 am (UTC)
They're just trying to placate people. "Seeee?! You can't criticize us NOW because we SAID we're working hard! Sure, there's no progress at all and it'd be easier if we'd actually let in willing people who know what they're doing and can help get the wiki up, but obviously no one has ever offered at all. Seriously!"
It's pretty pitiful.
Thu, Mar. 19th, 2009 06:08 am (UTC)
keep on trying your best :3
Fri, Mar. 20th, 2009 04:01 am (UTC)
It's OK - we know you're trying as hard as you can to get everything up and running again. I cross my fingers it's back soon.
In addition, I noticed that the link in the navigation column still connects to the old wiki, which doesn't exist anymore. You might want to fix that ;D
Fri, Mar. 20th, 2009 05:56 am (UTC)
Pfff, this is pathetic.
I have not had any contact with Womby since the last post and at this point I cannot do anything about the status of the wiki because he is the only one with access to the backups, so as angry as you may get and take it out in the comments, it won't change anything.
So basically, you're trying to avoid any responsibility and criticism for your mistakes. You should've planned ahead for this. Accept responsibility for it instead of being all "Wahhhh, don't be so meeeeeean, were tryinnnnng." No you aren't, all you're syaing over and over again is "We'll be back soon. Can't do anything. We'll be back soon. Can't do anything." No signs of even attempting to get things moving again because "someone else has the data". That's your fault. If you were really working on this stuff, we'd see some progress by now, not just hear about it to shut us up.
You're over. Accept it instead of trying to continue to make people worship at your feet awaiting a return that'll never come.
Fri, Mar. 20th, 2009 10:58 am (UTC)
Probability of theppn coming back: 0.0489%.
Fri, Mar. 20th, 2009 06:15 pm (UTC)
Dunno what to say but Im glad that u guys r trying hard to get wiki back and running and truth s Im missing it like crazy and imo people should in the mean time upload thing at other sites like: ppn.wikia.com and j-ongaku.org
Sat, Mar. 21st, 2009 08:42 pm (UTC)
I just stumbled across the situation after wondering myself what happened to the site...and I love how the anonymous comments are being made by assholes (excuse me) who are doing nothing but complaining about the lack of the site. I'm not complaining because this is obviously not your job, it's not a career and you all have lives, which is perfectly understandable. Therefore, thank you for your efforts. =]
Mon, Mar. 23rd, 2009 01:23 am (UTC)
after a few months without theppn, there are definitely alternatives out there! amazon.co.jp, wikipedia, cdjapan, yesasia and etc!
Thu, Mar. 26th, 2009 07:43 am (UTC)
And as far as wikis go, Kpopwiki, J-Ongaku (coming along nicely)... I'm sure people could list a few more.
Tue, Mar. 24th, 2009 12:52 pm (UTC)
its funny how fake some people can get
its been like 5 months! and still not action has been taken
get real people
theyre not even doing anything so i dont get how people can write "your trying your hardest"
Wed, Mar. 25th, 2009 08:52 am (UTC)
to the jerk who says that we say mean things anonymously. what does it even matter if you know who we are or not. I have nothing to hide from you guys, but this is impersonal, my identity is of no concern. so please get real.
as for this website, it's not that we're insensitive in mean, we're just voicing our honest opinions. we wouldn't all be this upset, if something has happened in the past i don't even know months. We haven't even seen a slight progress, it kind of just seems like we're hearing excuse after excuse. if these people claim to be trying, why have we not seen any progress whatsoever.
there's nothing wrong w/ honestly voicing our opinions. maybe if a little harsh, they'll actually do something about this site!
but i doubt that they ever care anymore.
if you guys don't care, hand the work over to someone else already!
you're just digging yourselves in a deeper hole!
Thu, Mar. 26th, 2009 01:39 pm (UTC)
Drama Drama Drama
Wapiko & Womby: You're both doing the best you can what with you have and have time for. Keep up the good work. ^^A little encouragement instead of a lot of complaining can go a long ways, can't it?
Thu, Mar. 26th, 2009 10:15 pm (UTC)
I'm quite disgusted by some of the comments above, the people at the wiki have no obligation to inform us of their prgress, they could have just let the wiki die and not have to explain themselves. However, they are making an effort and we should appreciate that and hope for the best. They are doing us a service after all by running the wiki in the first place and trying to restore it so I think some of the people above could at least try to be supportive. ^__^ Besides, they have their own lives, some of you may not be able to understand how busy some people can be, it is important to prioritise.
Fri, Mar. 27th, 2009 01:48 pm (UTC)
jarthel: Re: ^__^
from what I have read in other replies, the admin does have an obligation to the community because it was the contributors who made the site to what it was.
giving an update doesn't take long. 1 to 5 minutes perhaps?
ps. I'm not a contributor but I've read numerous replies from people who have made entries to the wiki.

well i already tried giving womby advice how to recover the corrupted database aswell of other ppl who offered help and it doesnt seem womby would like to want help
Sat, Mar. 28th, 2009 10:23 pm (UTC)
According to the conversation captured in this forum post, Womby has recovered the database for August 2008:http://forum.nihongogo.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=191&view=findpost&p=34707
If this is true please just put this up somewhere static, or give it to j-ongaku to host, so we can preserve the old data.
It sounds like Womby wants to stop maintaining the wiki since he doesn't have time for it, but I for one would really like to have access to that data again. Neither the internet archive or google cache seem to have much of it available anymore.
Sun, Mar. 29th, 2009 12:59 am (UTC)
(Anonymous): Re: request
Yeah, the August database is better than nothing, we only lost 1,5 months of edition. Can anyone close to womby ask him to offer one hour of his busy life to give it to trusted people who are willing to maintain to wiki? At least, there is a chance for wiki.theppn to come back.
