58468_0: For now

Hi guys. For the past month or so I've been in talks with jpopstop about a new wiki. He messaged me about his own replacement wiki at Jpop Stop, and has so far put in about 1500 old articles that he was able to get via caches from the old wiki at ThePPN. I was waiting for approval from Womby before making this post, but at this point I have not heard anything from him and feel we can't go on without a wiki any longer. This new wiki is extremely similar to the old one aside from the sidebar logo, but what we are missing is contributors. We can't import the entire wiki from before with just a few people, but if anybody reading this would be able to help I think we can start moving on and rebuilding the wiki. I know starting anew is frustrating when we had so much information at the old place, but for now, we can deal with it until we get legitimate backups (a process more complex than simply pushing a button and saying "GIVE ME BACKUPS ROARRR").

For now everyone, let's all help out at Jpop Stop!

EDIT: I need to clarify a few things.

- Jpop Stop is meant as the current replacement for The Asian Wiki. Its title has nothing to do with the content inside and all of the content that was allowed at the old wiki is allowed at this one.

- Yes, we will be using the previous TAW styles at this wiki. This includes the main templates for the artist pages, the page titles being proper for release names (Page Title instead of page title) and selective for artists (YUKI instead of Yuki), and the main formats we used for all the other places. If you need help with anything, comment here or you can go to my talk page.

Ugh.... I'll think about it.

I talked to him about it before and was less than thrilled.

Summer's coming soon, I'll decide then.

Problem with the name, though. It's not just Jpop.

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 05:31 pm (UTC)

PS wondering if womby got into some sort of trouble :\ this seems so unlike him....

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 05:45 pm (UTC)

I'm actually talking with him right now, he's back in England.

I felt the same as you too at first, Zeli. =/ But I think it's better than nothing, and completely devoid of the clutter at wikia.

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 05:45 pm (UTC)

ON A WELL-NEEDED VACATION I should clarify.XD Not like,deported or anything. ROFL

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 08:06 pm (UTC)

awww he's visiting his family, and such?
xD I thought he'd been deported for a while there

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 08:33 pm (UTC)

Haha, that's exactly it! He's there for about two weeks I think and then off to HK before heading back to Japan.

I can't imagine living in a country separate from where my family is. D:

As I recall, you had been upset after the issue with theppn losing months worth of images, so I can imagine any doubts that may arise from this. The point of porting over these thousands of articles thus far was to make the transition as painless as possible as start anew would've been way too hard for anyone who used theppn.

It'll take some time, yes. For just a month of time and about 3 people working on it, it's gotten pretty far with about 2000 articles currently. With help from those who worked on theppn, however, I'm sure it'll be at least half of where it was by June.

As for the name, I've thought about grabbing some other domains so as to not cause confusion with being just about jpop, but I know that theppn mainly covered j-artists, so I didn't think it'd be too much of an issue (at least for now).

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 08:04 pm (UTC)

We did not mainly cover J-Artists. O-o; One of our most viewed articles was Korean.

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 08:02 pm (UTC)

I was wondering what exactly do you need.
Infos? Special links?
Let me know, I might help someway

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 08:11 pm (UTC)

I'll contribute to it as much as I can.

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 08:47 pm (UTC)

After the semester finishes up, I'll help out a lot. I have back-ups of most of the main articles I did plus most of the images.

So is this going to be the new wiki? Should everything be styled the same?

Sun, Apr. 26th, 2009 11:27 pm (UTC)

Does womby consider about bring back the theppn or he will let it go with the wind and focus on his works? I'm always wondering about wait for the theppn or just build a new one, better last than not nothing. I'm contributing this wiki but I'm questioning myself it is okay for writing articles in the theppn style.

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 12:17 am (UTC)
(Anonymous): I'll help out

I don't care what happens to theppn at this point. I just want to see something started again. I'm gonna try to help out by doing the artists that I know. Right now I'm focused on finals for this week and next.

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 01:19 am (UTC)

JPOP STOP doesn't review KPOP & CPOP stuffs!!! So sad, I wish someone could make another wiki for those! No wonder I cannot find BoA & TVXQ!!!

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 01:25 am (UTC)

Have you used the search yet?

There are various C/K/J/T-Pop articles there, with more to be added. I know the name "jpopstop" may confuse people, but that can be worked on in the future.

Fri, May. 8th, 2009 07:11 am (UTC)

I wrote the DBSK article. Please rewrite it. Do not use my version, as I have said probably a million times.

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 01:51 am (UTC)

My favourite artist doesn't go under J-Pop, and barely goes under K-Pop. :(

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 02:19 am (UTC)

I will contribute for sure (well, right now they are going to cut my internet, but I will do it as soon as I can)

BTW, I'm Pizca from the old wiki.

What is the best way all of us in the comm (or just major fans of all your hard work) can help you? If you need help getting the Japanese for anything, here are the following links I use to edit all my ID tags and get images for hard to find and easy to find stuff:

Brand-X --Great for using to post for visual kei artists, for tracklists and rare, hard to find album covers.
VisuNavi --Great for tracklists, images, and the info on releases for vk artists
Amazon JP --When I can't find the tracklisting in Japanese anywhere else...
Yunisan --Tons of any kinda of artists, gives you tracklists on most anything older than 2007
Last resort for any info/Japanese listings for track names of Japanese artists
--Usually good for rare or hard to find album covers, tracklists, but the romanization is often a bit off.

For romanizing::
From Japanese:
Romaji.org--Sometimes hit or miss, one main error: translates "kimi" as kun but otherwise, does quite well
From Chinese/Mandarin/Cantonese: Pinyin.org

Hopefully, some of these links may help you guys in some way. I have some time on my hands, and a behemoth of a playlist (hello, 12000 song mark), so if you need any help or anything, contact me through AIM listed on my profile or comment my journal. Anything to show my appreciation for your previous exploits of hard work.

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 09:30 pm (UTC)

will help contribute ^^

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 09:51 pm (UTC)

YES! finally <3

I don't know if I can contribute.. but I'll try my best :3

Mon, Apr. 27th, 2009 09:51 pm (UTC)

I'll do what I can here and there as well. Question, should we use the Album template? And if pages are already made with the wiki.theppn templates, should we change them (not that hard to do)?

Tue, Apr. 28th, 2009 12:04 am (UTC)

I'll need to get with Wapiko as to what templates were used before to make these pages. A previous template currently shows when new pages are made, but I'd like it if all articles followed theppn's templates.

Tue, Apr. 28th, 2009 02:40 am (UTC)

Because I used to like to refer to data when not connected to the internet, I used to save the WikiPPN pages of most of the J-Pop artists I was interested in (as well as some from Wikipedia). Would these be able to be used to get data across ? A lot of them are quite recent ... I have currently over 300 folders - the latest are dated 27/11/2008 and none earlier than mid 2007 !!!

Tue, Apr. 28th, 2009 03:04 am (UTC)

I tried tagging most main articles as artists, althought I'm well aware that not all listed are artists and should be classified as groups. It was for easily finding the various main pages, so you can find it here:

I did use some of the cached pages from archive.org going from early 2007 until November 2008, so most of those pages do need updating. I can't say for sure which pages need updating, so feel free to change the ones that are either not formatted correctly or just old :)

(use this page to convert the html to mediawiki format)

Thanks - which 'Wiki Dialect' is best ?

and are we allowed to use material from Wikipedia ?

Tue, Apr. 28th, 2009 05:54 am (UTC)

Can't answer for the first one, but I can confirm that as at the old wiki, there should be no copying from Wikipedia.

Mon, May. 11th, 2009 01:46 pm (UTC)

Just like to say thanks for all the effort !

Mon, May. 11th, 2009 08:55 pm (UTC)

omfg all the detailed arashi member pages are there! :D

Mon, May. 18th, 2009 06:26 pm (UTC)

So everyone will stop complain for a while with the replacement. I'm not trying to be hard on womby because it won't change even a little thing about the situation, but at least can he tell us about a chance for The Theppn to come back or not? I started contribute The Theppn back in 2008 and all my contributions are with the 2008 database.

I read that he has the August 2008 database (before the server transfer) and he is working (for months) for the November database. Why can't he just put it up and everyone will be happy, losing a month of editions is better than losing all. It is sad the let the main English source of information of J-Pop for years die like this. In other case, if one day, The Theppn suddenly come back, then what will become Jpop Stop!?

Again, I'm not trying to blame womby, it is just my confusion about the situation.

Mon, May. 18th, 2009 09:31 pm (UTC)

At this point, it's uncertain what Womby is up to. I know the guy leads a hectic life, so perhaps the wiki wasn't a high priority for him. While it'd be great (and easier for everyone) if it returned, I'd rather set up this current wiki with as much content from the old wiki as possible.

As it stands, the new wiki has about 3500 pages out of theppn's 18000+, so it's about 1/6 the way there. Should others who helped with theppn contribute at the new one, I'm sure we can see that number again by as early as June/July. For now, we might get there by the early fall at the latest with the people who are currently there (who are all doing a phenomenal job, btw).

I'm working on getting all the artist pages over first (just got the "S" and "T" names to go) and then working on the group pages as the individual releases are probably a bit easier for some people to add. If theppn does in fact come back, that's still unknown at this point as it'd be nice to have more than one large asian wiki co-exist (just as there is google, yahoo, etc.). Just a wait-and-see game at this point :)

(On a side note, if anyone sees on this wiki articles/biographies that they wrote and perhaps don't want to see at the wiki, please let me know as I unfortunately have no idea who wrote them. I'll be updating things this week to note that a new biography will be needed if you believe it shouldn't be there.)

Tue, May. 19th, 2009 02:07 am (UTC)

Yes, I'm currently contributing the new wiki. It is better doing something than just sit and wait. Just sometimes I were confuse about the amount of works that we have to do (especially for big names artists' page like Ayumi Hamasaki or Kumi Koda) and think about The Theppn.

Just around 15,000 articles and it will be okay (the others are song pages which aren't high priority for now), so we are more close than 1/6. To see the Wiki back like before, I think we will need 3 months hard working like now.

Wed, May. 27th, 2009 11:19 pm (UTC)

I'm working for Nippon Project I'm sure I can help with some of the releases we have added and artist pages. Unfortunately I don't have much time now so I can only help while already doing work for NP :)
I'm really happy you guys created a new website (if temporary or not I don't care at least my favourite wiki is back *sob*) I can only imagine how it must be to lose such a website with that many informations! Keep up the good work :)
